Im Jahre 1992 wurde das „Helmut Baumann Atelier Stipendium“ von der Helmut Baumann-Stiftung und der Stadt Göppingen ins Leben gerufen. Das Stipendium erinnert mit seinem Namen an den Göppinger Künstler Helmut Baumann (1894-1978). Von ihm hängen nicht nur viele Bilder in Privathäusern der Region, Helmut Baumann hat bereits zu Lebzeiten schon eine Stiftung eingerichtet, die zusammen mit der Stadt Göppingen den künstlerischen Nachlass verwaltet und lebendig erhält.
Bewerbungsrichtlinien
Seit 2009 ist das Göppinger „Helmut Baumann Atelier Stipendium“ ein Projektstipendium, d.h. es ist kombiniert mit der Realisierung eines künstlerischen Projektes. Das „Helmut Baumann Atelier Stipendium“ wird an Bewerber und Bewerberinnen aus dem Bereich Bildende Kunst vergeben.
Das „Helmut Baumann Atelier Stipendium“ besteht aus der mietfreien Überlassung eines Wohnateliers mit 4 Räumen (Küche und Bad). Hierzu gewährt die Helmut Baumann-Stiftung monatlich 500.- €. Die Dauer des Stipendiums hängt von der Vorbereitungszeit und Produktion des zu realisierenden Projekts ab und wird zwischen dem Stipendiaten / der Stipendiatin und der Kunsthalle Göppingen vereinbart. Für das „Helmut Baumann Atelier Stipendium“ ist eine Selbstbewerbung möglich; ebenso können Künstlerinnen und Künstler vorgeschlagen werden.

Am 15. April eines jeden Jahres wird in der Kunsthalle Göppingen Bilanz gezogen und alle Projekte werden auf ihre Realisierbarkeit geprüft. Maximal 15 Projektideen und ein jeweils aussagekräftiges Portfolio über das bisherige Schaffen werden in ausführlicher Version angefordert.
Über die Vergabe entscheidet eine Jury: ein/e Vertreter/in der Helmut Baumann-Stiftung, ein/e Kurator/in, ein/e Künstler/in und der Direktor der Kunsthalle Göppingen (oder sein/e Stellvertreter/in) sowie das Kuratorium des „Helmut Baumann Atelier Stipendium“.
Die Kunsthalle Göppingen vereinbart mit dem ausgewählten Stipendiaten / der ausgewählten Stipendiatin das Projekt, dessen Realisierung und den Zeitraum des Projektstipendiums.
Helmut Baumann Atelier Scholarship
The Helmut Baumann Atelier Scholarship was launched in 1992 by the Helmut Baumann Foundation and the City of Göppingen. The scholarship takes its name from the Göppingen artist Helmut Baumann (1894-1978), whose works hang in many houses in the region. Before his death Baumann set up a foundation that collaborated with the City of Göppingen to manage his body of work and ensure it remained an active part of the region’s cultural life.
Application guidelines
Since 2009 the Helmut Baumann Atelier Scholarship has been a project scholarship, which means that it is intended to fund a specific artistic project. It is awarded to applicants working in the visual arts.
The scholarship covers rental of a residential studio with four rooms (plus kitchen and bathroom), to the value of €500 per month.
The duration of the scholarship depends on the time required for preparing and completing the project and will be agreed between the awardee and the Kunsthalle Göppingen.
Applications for the Helmut Baumann Atelier Scholarship can be submitted by artists themselves; third-party recommendations for individual artists are also accepted.

Artists may apply for the Helmut Baumann Atelier Scholarship at any time.
Applications should include:
- Details of possible or definite project concept
- Project summary (no longer than one A4 page)
- Biography, list of exhibitions and bibliography

On 15 April each year, the Kunsthalle Göppingen assesses on the basis of their feasibility all applications received that year. Up to 15 projects are selected and those applicants are then requested to supply a full project description and a comprehensive portfolio detailing their work to date.
The scholarship is awarded by a jury comprising a representative of the Helmut Baumann Foundation, a curator and the director of the Kunsthalle Göppingen (or his or her representative), and the Helmut Baumann Atelier Scholarship Board.
The Kunsthalle Göppingen and the selected awardee agree on the project, its implementation and the duration of the scholarship.

Helmut Baumann wurde 1894 in Bitz bei Balingen geboren und starb 1978 in Göppingen-Bartenbach.
Er war Autodidakt, sein Brotberuf als Lehrer sicherte die Existenz der Familie. In späteren Jahren, nach 1945, hatte die für ihn Malerei absolute Priorität. Sein Werk ist von vielen Einflüssen geprägt, die ihre Wurzeln bei Cézanne aber auch bei anderen künstlerischen Strömungen des ersten Drittels des 20. Jahrhunderts haben. Zeitlebens hat Baumann immer wieder neu angesetzt und sich andere Ausdrucksformen zu eigen gemacht. So gibt es auch eine bemerkenswerte Parallelität eines figürlichen und eines abstrakten Werkbereichs, die Helmut Baumann zeitweise parallel entwickelte. Der frankophile Künstler holte sich seit den 1950er Jahren einen großen Teil seiner Motive auf ausgedehnten Frankreich-Reisen. Im Süden sind Arles in der Provence und die Stadt der Zigeuner Les-Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer für ihn zentrale Orte, eine besondere Rolle spielt jedoch Paris als Ziel seiner Interessen als Maler.
Helmut Baumann hat ein umfangreiches Werk hinterlassen. Sein künstlerischer Nachlass von ca. 500 Gemälden und mehreren tausend Zeichnungen befindet sich in der Obhut der Helmut Baumann-Stiftung, die er zu gleichen Teilen den Verwaltungen von Göppingen und Süßen überlassen hat. Die Helmut Baumann-Stiftung, in der sich angesehene Bürger der Stadt engagieren, verwaltet dieses Vermögen nicht nur, sondern setzt ihre finanziellen Mittel auch zur aktiven Förderung junger Künstler ein, so dass das Wirken des Künstlers bis heute eine kulturelle Bedeutung für die Stadt hat.
Helmut Baumann
Helmut Baumann was born in Bitz, southern Germany in 1894. He died in 1978 in the Göppingen district of Bartenbach.
He was a self-taught man and worked as a teacher to earn enough money to support his family. However, after 1945 he dedicated himself fully to painting. His works reveal a wide variety of influences from artists such as Cézanne and many artistic movements of the early twentieth century. Throughout his life Baumann constantly explored new directions and mastered new forms of expression. As a result, many of his works strikingly combine the representational and the abstract – two styles that Baumann developed simultaneously at times. Baumann had a great love of France and from the 1950s he found many of his motifs on extended visits to the country. The southern city of Arles in Provence and the gypsy town of Les-Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer both played important roles in his work, though Paris was the main focus of his artistic interests.
Baumann has left behind a rich body of work – some 500 paintings and several thousand drawings are under the care of the Helmut Baumann Foundation, which, at his request, is now administered in equal parts by Göppingen and the town of Süßen. The foundation, which benefits from the dedicated work of well-respected citizens, does more than simply manage the assets – it uses its financial resources to actively promote young artists and ensure that Baumann’s work continues to contribute to the region’s cultural life.
